One of the glaring weaknesses that the Seattle Seahawks that hindered the team was their lack of a reliable running game.

It is an area that head coach Pete Carroll is hoping to direct much attention toward over the offseason to help make a key part of their identity once again, according to Curtis Crabtree of Pro Football Talk.

“There were issues during the season,” Carroll said on Tuesday. “The big one I’d like to address for you is we have a real formula for how we win. We’ve been unable to incorporate a major aspect of that – running the football the way we want. There are tremendous examples of teams around the league that have turned their fortunes around with a formula that should sound familiar to you: Teams running the football, playing good defense and doing the kicking game thing. That’s the formula that has proven historically the best in this game.”

The Seahawks possessed the 23rd-best running game in the league this season totaling just 1,629 rushing yards. Much of that came from quarterback Russell Wilson being the leading rusher with 586 yards while recording three of their four touchdowns. The only other rushing touchdown came from J.D. McKissic in Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Entering the 2017 season, the Seahawks had hoped that Eddie Lay could step in as the lead running back or even see Thomas Rawls recapture his 2015 form prior to his broken ankle injury. Instead, both Lacy and Rawls struggled to provide any consistency in the running game largely due to injuries. Meanwhile, Mike Davis led all running backs on the roster with 240 yards on 68 carries

This could foreseeably put them on the market to bring in a veteran running back on the free agent market such as Jamaal Charles or Frank Gore, who are both looking for right opportunities in the next chapter fo their careers. Ultimately, there are several different routes that the Seahawks could take in the coming months in the offseason.
