In recent weeks, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has been more outspoken regarding racial injustice and its connection to the league. Once again voicing his personal opinion on Monday, Goodell is now encouraging a NFL franchise to sign former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and current unrestricted free agent Colin Kaepernick.
“Well, listen, if he wants to resume his career in the NFL, then obviously it's gonna take a team to make that decision,” Goodell recently said during a conversation with Mike Greenberg of ESPN. “But I welcome that, support a club making that decision, and encourage them to do that.”
While not having played in the NFL since back in 2016, Colin Kaepernick has allegedly been considered by a few teams from around the league, though a connection to the Seattle Seahawks is really the only link that has somewhat materialize to a legitimate level. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll even remarked that Seattle should revisit such talks this offseason with Kaepernick now more likely to land a NFL job with significant backing currently aiding his attempt at a return.
“If his efforts are not on the field but continuing to work in this space, we welcome him to that table and to help us, guide us, help us make better decisions about the kinds of things that need to be done in the communities,” Goodell added, via ESPN. “We have invited him in before, and we want to make sure that everybody's welcome at that table, and trying to help us deal with some very complex, difficult issues, that have been around for a long time. But I hope we're at a point now where everybody's committed to making long-term, sustainable change.”
The 32-year-old Colin Kaepernick spent his entire six-year NFL playing career with the 49ers. He was originally selected in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He led San Francisco to an NFC championship and an appearance in the Super Bowl in 2013.
