The Seattle Seahawks waived wide receiver Tamorrion Terry from the roster on Wednesday. While this was somewhat odd timing for the release of an undrafted free agent, it turns out there's a very good reason why Terry was let go.
Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports Terry was one of 11 people “indicted on charges they killed a 21-year-old woman in a 2018 gang-related mass shooting.” A grand jury in Georgia handed down the sentences last week, with 11 people getting hit with a felony murder charge.
Here are more details on what happened:
The murder victim, Za’ Quavia Smith, was among at least seven people shot at the Studio 2.0 nightclub in Ashburn, Georgia, in June of 2018.
Days later, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Jontavious Coley and charged the then-17 year-old with felony murder and aggravated assault. Police at the time said that Coley was one of several people who fired multiple rounds into a crowd trying to flee the club.
“Basically, it boils down to they’re wearing one color, this other gang is wearing another color,” Ashburn police Major Richard Purvis told reporters in the early days of the investigation. “They’re, in technical terms or street language, they’re beefing. But it put all these other people in danger.”
The shooting occurred before Terry's redshirt freshman season at Florida State. He played three seasons with the Seminoles and had a big sophomore year, catching 60 passes for 1,188 yards and nine touchdowns. The wideout only appeared in six games in the shortened 2020 season, catching 23 passes for 289 yards and a touchdown.
The Seahawks signed Terry as a rookie free agent on May 14 after he went undrafted in the 2021 NFL Draft. But after this news of his indictment, which also included two of Terry's high school teammates, Seattle waived him without an injury designation.
