Free agency tampering kicks off on Monday and the Seattle Seahawks want to re-sign Jadeveon Clowney, but they might not have enough money.
According to Peter King of NBC’s Football Morning in America, the Seahawks think Clowney is a great fit for their defense, but they aren't prepared to pay top of the market prices:
Seattle will wait for the price to go down on Jadeveon Clowney, and if it does, the Seahawks very much want him. But I’d be surprised if they paid him premier pass-rush money. Another team with some cash (Giants? Jets?) might.
According to Spotrac.com, the Seahawks currently sit with almost $50 million in cap space, but it doesn't appear they are willing to use a large chunk of that on Clowney.
As King pointed out, both New York teams are expected to have an interest in Clowney which could cause a bidding war and drive the Seahawks out of the equation.
The Seahawks made a trade for Clowney before the start of the 2019 season but he dealt with a core muscle injury most of the season and that led to him racking up only three sacks. If the Seahawks were to lose Clowney that would be a big loss to the defense, and it would probably require them to find a different defensive end during free agency.
The Seahawks finished the 2019 season with an 11-5 record, but they were beaten in the Wild Card round in the playoffs by Dallas Cowboys. Even if Clowney isn't back, there are going to be high expectations for this team.
