The Atlanta Falcons made the decision on Thursday to agree to terms on a five-year, $150 million extension with star quarterback Matt Ryan. It has put into focus the pending contract situation a few other quarterbacks in the league one of which is Seattle Seahawks Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson.

Wilson is heading into the third year of his four-year, $86.7 million deal that has begun to put the Seahawks on the clock to work out a new deal. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Seattle is expected at this point to place the franchise tag on the 29-year-old once his deal expires.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the current expectation from Wilson’s perspective is that he’ll finish his current deal and receive the franchise tag in 2020. Based on his 2019 cap number of $25.286 million, it will cost the Seahawks $30.34 million to keep him for another season after the expiration of his current deal.

This would be a hefty price tag for the Seahawks to take on, but it's clear that the team has no sense of direction in their contract talks with Wilson. He is ingrained as the team's franchise quarterback, but that hasn't led to any consistent dialogue toward a new contract being worked out ahead of the expiration of his current deal.

Seattle has a strong desire to kept him aboard given the willingness to spend a large amount of money a franchise tag, which pushes the ball in Wilson's court. If he's still playing at a high level once his contract expires, it could make for the team to unload the truck to keep him aboard.

There is still plenty of time from now until then, but things could quickly get complicated on both sides in the potential contract negotiations with Wilson's long-term future in Seattle hanging in the balance.
