The 2020 NFL Draft is going to be far from a traditional draft, with teams conducting their draft from their own homes. Despite the unusual circumstances, Jason Licht — the GM of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — is ready for the challenge of a virtual draft.
“Sometimes you can get over-technical in these situations,” Licht said, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “You want to make sure you have a hardline phone. You want to make sure you have several phones available to you, cell phones, what have you. But sometimes it comes down to old-fashioned picking up the phone and calling on the league office and saying, ‘We’re going to pick this player.’
The original plan was to have the 2020 NFL Draft in Las Vegas in front of the Bellagio. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the NFL had to make the necessary adjustments to this year's draft.
Article Continues BelowFor nearly the past month, teams have been unable to use their facilities. As a result, coaches and players have resorted to using Zoom, a video chat platform, to keep in contact during the offseason.
In terms of the upcoming draft, the NFL informed teams to hold their draft war rooms at a member of the organization's house. With that in mind, it appears that Licht is going to be making the selections for the Buccaneers at his residence.
It's going to be an interesting spectacle to watch, having teams making their draft choices via a video chat. Nevertheless, Licht is confident that the Buccaneers will be prepared for anything that might happen.
