The Los Angeles Rams made one of the more intriguing signings last season when they pried Eric Weddle out of retirement ahead of the playoffs. The veteran safety stepped in for the injured Jordan Fuller and helped LA win it all. One of the teams they faced en route to their title, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, had a similar idea.

Former Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians said on an Arizona radio show that he reached out to an old friend to play wide receiver after Chris Godwin tore his ACL last season. He reached out to Larry Fitzgerald, who declined the invitation to join Tom Brady and Tampa Bay for the end of their season.

Fitzgerald spent five seasons with Arians as his head coach during his Hall of Fame-caliber career with the Arizona Cardinals. The 11-time Pro Bowler retired after the 2020 season. He would have been a very interesting addition for Tom Brady, even at the age of 38. Tampa Bay never got the chance to make it happen.

Adding Fitzgerald might not have changed much about the Buccaneers' season. In his last full season, he recorded only 409 receiving yards across 13 games. Although Tampa Bay needed receivers after Godwin's injury and Antonio Brown's departure, Fitzgerald wouldn't have been able to do much. Still, it would've made for a very interesting late-season addition that would have given Fitzgerald the chance to win a ring and play with Brady, who he sees as the greatest ever.

Arians himself has retired by stepping away from coaching and moving to Tampa Bay's front office. Brady retired…for about a month and is now going to lead the Buccaneers again. Brady and Fitzgerald didn't get the chance to play together but they did find the chance to work together on a podcast with Jim Gray.
