After Tom Brady announced his decision to unretire and return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, one of the biggest questions asked is: why did he retire in the first place?
For insight on Tom Brady coming out of retirement, listen below:
To be fair, Brady's retirement came as a shock since it was clear he still has a lot left in the tank based on how he played in 2021. Not to mention that after he called it a career, the major talking point had been his potential return — and all these talks started a little less than a week after he announced he was done. That speaks volumes of how confusing his decision was.
And so when he chose to return, people are seeking an explanation about Brady's thinking and what happened behind the scenes.
Fortunately, Brady's dad answered the question in his interview with Dan Hausle and 7News. Apparently, according to Tom Brady Sr., the veteran quarterback felt “pressured by outside forces.”
Tom Brady Sr. tells me his son felt “pressured by outside forces” to make earlier decision to walk away. Was looking forward to golf with his son but “excited” he’ll play again. Hear more from our conversation on #7News tonight. pic.twitter.com/dkrZtgLFlF

When Tom Brady announced his official retirement, it looked like he was tired to compete, as he highlighted he could no longer make that kind of commitment. Given that he always wants to give his 100 percent, he opted to call it a career instead of playing football halfheartedly.
In his recent interviews as well, Brady highlighted his desire to spend more time with his wife and kids, which he was unable to do while playing.
Clearly, though, the desire to compete continues to spark inside Brady and has not really wavered. The Buccaneers QB might have needed the retirement break to really reflect on what he wanted to do, so his retirement announcement came a little premature.
Hopefully, Brady will give his own explanation of what went behind his initial retirement, only to come back. His dad didn't really give the details, so fans will only know what's real if TB12 will open up about it.
As for the Buccaneers, though, his decision came just at the right time with free agency coming up. Now, they do not need to find a replacement for their star quarterback and can focus on other areas they need to improve to get more weapons for their superstar.
