Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles is set to have plenty of options at the running back position for the 2022 campaign, and among them, Leonard Fournette will be the starter come Week 1.
Bowles took some time to speak during the opening day of the Buccaneers’ rookie minicamp schedule on Friday, where he provided an outlook on the team’s running back situation coupled with just what rookie Rachaad White can bring to the offense.
“We know that Leonard [Fournette] is our starter, obviously,” Bowles said. “We look for White to compete with [Ke'shawn] Vaughn and Gio [Benard], and we'll see from there.
“He has good feet coming out of college. He has good size – he has good feet and good speed. We'll see in preseason where he fits at. He's capable of spelling Leonard – he's capable of catching the ball. He's capable of doing a lot of things.”
Out of the three players who logged at least 30 rush attempts for Tampa Bay in the 2021 regular season, only Ronald Jones II is the lone player who will not feature for the team in the 2022 campaign. Jones opted to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency, although the Buccaneers responded by keeping both Fournette and Giovani Bernard on the team via free agent deals.
As Bowles touched on, White is also slated to receive his fair share of opportunities later this year. The Buccaneers selected him in the third round of last month’s draft.
In the big picture, the Buccaneers may very well roll out a formidable, balanced offense for quarterback Tom Brady in the upcoming season.
