Champ Bailey and Charles Woodson are no longer active in the NFL, but they inspire the pro football players of the present day… such as Kenny Vaccaro.
Some athletes choose their jersey numbers for sentimental reasons, others could care less, and some do it because their teammates paid them for their old one. Tennessee Titans safety Kenny Vaccaro chose his No. 24 because of the players who donned the number in the past… and, of course, not to look fat.
When asked why he chose his number by John Glennon of The Athletic, Vaccaro responded by saying:
“Probably because of (Pro Football Hall of Fame members) Champ Bailey and Charles Woodson. Growing up I was watching those guys. And because I wore No. 4 in college. And because it makes me look faster. Some numbers look better than others. You put a 30-number on there and I look 20 pounds heavier.”
Choosing to don a number because Champ Bailey and Charles Woodson wore it (and Kobe Bryant) isn't a bad reason. The better one is to look good.
As Deion Sanders would say, “If you look good, you feel good, If you feel good, you play good, If you play good, they pay good,” and as Vaccaro would mimic:
“There are certain numbers that just make you look better. And if you look better, you play better. And you get paid better.”
Vaccaro figures that he looks better in No. 24. He's also earned a bigger paycheck than when he wore No. 32 for the New Orleans Saints. After one year of donning two-four for the Titans, Tennessee gave him a four-year $26 million extension, far more than what he made in Nola. Coincidence? I think not.
