The Houston Texans are headed toward their first losing season while falling short of reaching the playoffs under head coach Bill O'Brien.
Despite the team's difficulties this season, O'Brien stated on Monday that he expects to be back with the team next season, according to Sarah Barshop of ESPN.
On Monday he said he expects to be back in 2018. He also said his agent has not had a discussion with Texans owner Bob McNair about a contract extension and he has “no idea” whether that will happen after the season.
“I signed a five-year contract. I expect to be back here, but those decisions are not made by me,” O'Brien said. “My job is to make sure that I coach these players. I really care about these players. I really care about how hard they're working and the effort that they're putting in. And we're not seeing the results on the field, so I really want to try to improve that over the next three weeks.”
O'Brien currently has one year left on his original five-year deal that he signed with the team that runs through the 2018 campaign. He has helped lead the team to three straight 9-7 seasons prior to 2017 that resulted in a pair of playoff appearances including a trip to the AFC Divisional round last year.
Article Continues BelowThe Texans had appeared to be on the upswing with rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson leading the charge, but that came to a screeching halt as suffered a torn ACL back in practice following Week 8. Since then, Houston has dropped six out of their last seven games and have struggled offensively with Tom Savage under center.
In fact, the team could be headed toward their third quarterback this season with Savage in the concussion protocol that may put T.J. Yates in the starting lineup in Week 15. The absence of Watson has thrown the team completely off course, and with O'Brien's future in question, the 2017 first-round pick took to Twitter to voice his support for his head coach.

Depending on how the Texans finish up the season, it could go a long way in impacting the decision-making process from the organization regarding O'Brien over the offseason.
