The Washington Football Team took a tough loss in Week 3 to the Cleveland Browns. That 34-20 defeat included a pretty miserable game from quarterback Dwayne Haskins.
However, Washington head coach Ron Rivera is not giving up on him just yet. According to Ethan Cadeaux of NBCSports.com, Rivera not only still has Haskins set as the starter, but he doesn't plan on changing that anytime soon.
“As long as he continues to do things that show you that he can make things happen, I’m going to support the young man,” Rivera said. “I’m not going to pull the plug on him because something like this happens. In my opinion, he’s barely through a rookie year right now, in terms of being out there, learning and growing. . . .
“He’ll get better. He’ll grow, and I think he’s a guy we can follow.””
Rivera is quick to point to the positives in Haskins' game for Washington. He says that he's going to support the quarterback as long as he continues to show that he can make things happen.
And as much as some Washington fans might not want to admit it, Haskins does make plays. Yes, he struggles at times and can be inconsistent. But he also makes some fantastic plays and throws.
Rivera also points to Haskins inexperience with Washington. He played just one year in college and still has not even 16 career starts in the NFL. It might be tiresome for fans to continue to hear this “excuse” but it is simply a fact.
Article Continues BelowQuarterbacks require patience. Haskins is still extremely young in Washington, without a lot of roster help.
Ron Rivera knows this is a long-term process.
