The Boston Bruins will head into Washington DC today as they look to take on the Washington Capitals in this Sunday matinee game. The Bruins have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL since February while the Capitals are still in the second wild-card spot as they struggle with their own inconsistencies. With that said, it’s time to continue our NHL odds series with a Bruins-Capitals prediction and pick.

Why The Bruins Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Boston Bruins have won eight of their last 10 games and will look to add another one to the win column today as they wrap up a four-game road trip. However, the Bruins are short a few of their key players going into this matchup: David Pastrnak and Hampus Lindholm. The Bruins are hoping they'll be back for playoffs, but it could still be lingering. The Bruins have a very good defensive team, which makes it nice for a goaltender to not have to worry about too much activity. Speaking of goaltenders, in net tonight for the Bs should be Linus Ullmark, who's currently riding a personal six-game winning streak. He's averaging a .912 save percentage and allowing 2.58 goals against per game. He'll look to shut down Ovechkin and company today and get a few more points so they can clinch playoffs.

Why The Capitals Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Washington Capitals are on the tail end of a back-to-back series after defeating the Penguins in Pittsburgh yesterday. The Caps are hurrying back home for another game today, with about an 18-hour turnaround. If the playoffs started today, the Caps would be in the second wild-card spot, but they're not out of the woods just yet, the Islanders have been playing good hockey lately and are on their tail. The Caps will need to win again today to feel a little more confident about their playoff status. Starting in net tonight for the Capitals will be Vitek Vanecek, who is sporting a .911 save percentage and allowing 2.60 goals against per game. The Caps will look to put down the Bruins today with very little turnaround time.

Final Bruins-Capitals Prediction & Pick

Unless these teams end up meeting in the playoffs, this will be the last matchup between these teams this year. Both of these teams are sound groups of players, but the Bruins are the better team in the standings and will be much more rested with a hot goaltender. It's almost as if the stars are aligning for this game. The Bruins also have more to play for as they are just five points back from the Maple Leafs in the standings while the Caps are pretty certain that they'll end up securing the second wild-card spot. Give me the Bruins in this one, I think the little rest that the Capitals are going to get isn't going to help them. And the odds in favor of the Bruins are actually quite a steal in my opinion, based on how they've been playing recently.

Final Bruins-Capitals Prediction and Pick: Bruins Moneyline (-122)
