The Anaheim Ducks are circling the drain, as they have been suffering losses left and right. They get another shot at ending their winless drought this Tuesday night, as they face the Dallas Stars, who still need wins to secure at least a wild card spot in the Western Conference. With that said, it’s a good time to check out our NHL odds series, which includes our Stars-Ducks prediction, odds, and pick we have laid out below.

Why the Stars Could Cover the Spread

The Stars cooled off a bit after a three-game win streak, as they suffered a 4-1 home loss to the Vancouver Canucks over the weekend. Dallas has won its last two games following a loss, which may or may not mean anything, but perhaps more telling is the fact that the Stars will look to get back in the win column after two full days of rest.

With some fresh legs, the Stars can expect a better performance than in the Canucks game which they had a very good chance of winning until giving up three unanswered goals in the third period. The Stars have won four of their past five games on the heels of a refreshing two full days of rest. Plus, Dallas appears to have the perfect opponent for a rebound.

The Ducks have been floundering for quite some time now. Anaheim welcomes the Stars this Tuesday night with a nine-game losing skid. The Ducks’ defense has been especially bad over that stretch, having allowed a total of 39 goals – or 4.3 per contest.

It’s fair to expect a terrific performance from the Stars in this game, considering the body of work they’ve done this season as road favorites. In their last 16 games as an away chalk, the Stars are 11-5. Moreover, Dallas is 22-8 in 30 games as a straight-up favorite. After failing to score in six power-play chances in their last two games, the Stars might finally end that drought tonight against Anaheim’s defense that has allowed at least a power-play goal in each of the Ducks’ last five games, with opponents going 8/18 on the mad advantage in that span.

Why the Ducks Could Cover the Spread

It’s a challenge to come up with something good to say about the Ducks, as they have just been so horrible this month. They have only won twice in 12 games this March and, as mentioned earlier, have not tasted victory in nine consecutive games. The losing has to end at some point, but it’s likely not going to happen against a much more talented Dallas squad.

Then again, maybe Lady Luck will give the Ducks a wink. For one, the Ducks are 8-3 in their last 11 games on a Tuesday. That’s really just a shallow trend, but it’s better to have something positive to hold on to for this team that is hoping to get a stronger performance from goalie John Gibson this time around.

The 28-year-old netminder is 4-6-0 with a .913 SV% and 2.86 GAA in 10 career starts against the Stars, If anything, Dallas is 0/8 on the man advantage all-time against Gibson. And while Anaheim has been like a broken turnstile when defending against power plays, the same can also be said about the Stars, who are only 19th in the NHL with a 77.96 penalty kill percentage.

The Stars’ special teams haven’t been playing at a high level of late, as Dallas has allowed seven power-play goals and a short-handed score over the course of their last eight games. Dallas hasn’t been winning possession battles lately, recording just a 40.7 CF% in four games, which could signify a continuing regression beyond its Canucks loss. Lastly, the Ducks are 6-1 in their last seven games as the home team versus Dallas.

Final Stars-Ducks Prediction & Pick

Given all that we know about the Stars and the Ducks over their respective past several games and the quality of performances in those contests, the easy pick here would be the Stars. Dallas is just 14-19 this season against the puck line in road games, but against a Ducks team on a tailspin, we should be rolling the dice for a Stars cover.

Final Stars-Ducks Pick: Stars -1.5 (+146)
