The Dallas Stars will head into western Canada tonight to take on the Edmonton Oilers. The Stars head into this game currently in a wild card position in the west with 91 points. The Oilers are currently in second place in the Pacific Division with 94 points. If they keep winning, both of these teams will easily make the playoffs, but it won't be an easy battle, starting with tonight. With that, it’s time to continue our NHL odds series with a Stars-Oilers prediction and pick.

Why The Stars Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Dallas Stars kicked off their three-game Canadian road trip with a 6-2 loss to Vancouver on Monday, so they'll be looking to get back on track for the playoffs as soon as possible. The Stars have 91 points in the last wild card spot right now and are trying to pull away from the Golden Knights and the Canucks who each have 87 points. A loss tonight will easily put them in a difficult spot, trying to remain in the playoffs. The Stars have kept pace with the playoff race, going 5-3-2 in their last 10 games, but are almost in “must-win” territory with teams on their heels.

The man that's likely going to be held accountable for the result tonight will likely be goaltender Jake Oettinger. He's been stepping it up lately and is averaging a .913 save percentage while allowing 2.56 goals against per game. He'll look to shut down a very powerful Oilers offense tonight.

Why The Oilers Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Edmonton Oilers are playing some great hockey lately, going 9-1-1 in their last 11 matchups. They're currently in second place in the Pacific Division with 94 points, but haven't technically clinched a playoff spot yet. The Oilers' offense is heavily equipped, per usual, scoring 3.73 goals per game in their last 11. Defensively, the Oilers have struggled all season, mainly due to their goaltending, but recently Mike Smith has stepped up in the net, going 6-1-0 with a .943 save percentage over his last seven games. He'll likely get the start tonight as they try to clinch a playoff spot and spoil the Stars from getting theirs.

Final Stars-Oilers Prediction & Pick

The Stars are a weird team to bet on because they're just average. They've put up middle-of-the-pack numbers all year long and are so unpredictable that it's really tough for bettors to find a clear lock. The Stars are 2-0 so far against the Oilers this season, but both wins were at home. Now that the Oilers are back in their own barn and have all the momentum right now, I can see them getting the win tonight.

Typically I feel like I would take the over total goals in a game like this where both offenses are known to be very strong, but for some reason, it's just not sitting right with me tonight. With that said, I'm going to trust my gut here and just pick the Stars to cover the spread. It's not great odds at -176, but it's relatively the same as the Oilers Moneyline, so I like the Stars fighting hard for that playoff spot tonight.

Final Stars-Oilers Prediction and Pick: Stars +1.5 (-176)
