For the third time in eight Super Bowl appearance, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots fell short.
The latest such example saw quarterback Nick Foles lead the Philadelphia Eagles to their first win on this stage on Sunday night, 41-33. It has also put Foles alongside New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning as the only two players at the position to beat Brady in the Super Bowl.
In his first Super Bowl appearance, Foles stepped up in the moment by putting together a strong performance while completing 28 of 43 passes for 373 yards and three touchdowns. He also posted a 106.1 passer rating and recorded a receiving touchdown in the process of becoming the first player in NFL history to throw and catch a touchdown in the Super Bowl. Foles was able to get the best of Brady, who set a Super Bowl record with 505 passing yards and three touchdown passes.
It was a huge outing from the 40-year-old that saw him help the Patriots completely erase a 10-point deficit to grab the lead midway through the fourth quarter. However, Foles didn't falter to the huge shift in momentum in the second half guiding the Eagles to a pair of scoring drives that put them ahead for the rest of the game.
Meanwhile, Manning was able to do that twice that came in close games that needed some huge plays from him to lift the Giants to wins over the Patriots. He was a part of two the biggest plays in Super Bowl history with the helmet catch with David Tyree in Super Bowl 52 and another one to Mario Manningham on a precise throw down the sideline in Super Bowl 46.
These are the only blemishes on Brady's sure-fire Hall of Fame career as he's already a five-time Super Bowl champion, four-time Super Bowl MVP, and three-time NFL MVP. These wins would have only further built his argument as being the greatest quarterback in league history.
With Brady expected to return next season, he will have another opportunity to add another Lombardi trophy to his name.
