Novak Djokovic is coming closer to making history at the Olympic tennis tournament. Rafael Nadal won men's singles Olympic gold in 2008 in Beijing. Andy Murray won the 2012 gold at Wimbledon for Team Great Britain, and he then defended that gold medal at Rio in 2016. Alexander Zverev won in Tokyo a few years ago. Djokovic has done just about everything in his career except win an Olympic gold in men's singles. He is now two wins away from achieving that feat and lending even more completeness to a career which is as complete as any in the history of tennis. Djokovic hasn't done everything in tennis, but he has come closer than just about anyone else with the possible exception of Rod Laver, the man who won two Grand Slams in 1962 and 1969. Djokovic came one win short of the Grand Slam in 2021, but he has done everything else, and moreover, he has done everything on a much larger scale than Laver did over the course of a full career. Djokovic has more than double the amount of major championships Laver won. He has exceeded the major title counts of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Djokovic watched Federer retire from tennis a few years ago. Nadal is about to retire, though he hasn't made an announcement. Djokovic is still going strong, and he is closing in on what would be a profoundly meaningful feat in Paris. \
There is a backstory to this match against Lorenzo Musetti.
In the 2021 French Open men's singles fourth round, Musetti grabbed a two-set lead, but Djokovic then stormed back and won the match with relative ease. He was never remotely threatened in the final three sets. Musetti has been in position to win a number of important matches but, until recently, has not finished the job. He lost to Djokovic in the Wimbledon semifinals a few weeks ago. That said, we might be seeing a new Musetti. He has lost just five matches since late May. He just beat Alexander Zverev in the Olympic quarterfinals, dethroning the reigning Olympic champion. The Italian is breathing confidence, injecting intrigue into this semifinal showdown.

Why Novak Djokovic Could Cover The Spread
Djokovic looks like a player who simply won't be denied. He was down 4-0 in the second set against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals. He was down 5-3, 40-0 — triple set point — and still came back to win the set. That's what he does. He is likely to do the same against Musetti.
Why Lorenzo Musetti Could Cover The Spread
It's clay, Musetti's best surface. Musetti is playing the best and most confident tennis of his life. He might not win outright, but he looks like a player who is playing well enough to keep this match close. He is also 15 years younger than Djokovic and might have fresher legs.

When we talked about Djokovic and Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals, we expected Djokovic to win and Tsitsipas to probably play one set closely. We feel similarly about this match.
