In a stunning finale to the 2023 NWSL Championship, Gotham FC captain Ali Krieger led her team to a historic victory, securing their first ever championship title in franchise history. With less than two minutes of stoppage time remaining, Krieger's leadership was critical, especially when Gotham's goalkeeper was sent off with a red card, presenting OL Reign with a golden opportunity. However, Gotham's defense held strong, blocking a critical shot from Reign's Rose Lavelle.

This victory was not just a testament to Gotham's resilience but also marked the culmination of a remarkable career, the championship being Krieger's final pro game. At 39, Krieger retired on a high, having led a team that finished last in the previous season to championship glory. Krieger's journey to this point was marked by perseverance and a steadfast belief in her team's capabilities.

“I knew we would be in this position,” Krieger said, via Katie Manganelli of Just Women's Sports. “And I knew that everyone was willing to buy into the plan, to the process, and also to themselves.”

The championship game was also notable for being the final professional match for Krieger's long-time friend and rival, Megan Rapinoe of OL Reign, who unfortunately suffered an injury early in the game.

“I’m so happy for her. So happy for her to be able to go out like this on an incredible career,” Rapinoe said. “It’s obviously very sad for us but an amazing accomplishment for them and an incredible season and incredible turnaround from last year.”

In the end, Krieger's dream was realized as she lifted the trophy, amidst fireworks and gold confetti, marking a fitting end to an illustrious career.

“I’ve dreamt of this for so long,” Krieger said. “To play club soccer in my own country and to win it in front of 25,000 people, and it’s only going to get better and better. This is just the beginning.”
