In a dramatic finale to the 2023 NWSL season, Gotham FC clinched their first-ever championship title in a thrilling 2-1 victory over OL Reign. The star of the night, Midge Purce, emerged as the centerpiece of this historic achievement, being crowned the championship series MVP.

The final was marked by intense drama, including an early departure of Megan Rapinoe and fluctuating scores. The match reached a peak of unpredictability when Gotham FC goalkeeper Mandy Haught was sent off, leading to field player Nealy Martin taking over the goalkeeping duties in the final moments.

Purce's performance was central to Gotham FC’s success. She provided assists for both goals scored by Lynn Williams and Esther and led the match in successful dribbles.

“Midge is incredible on the ball,” Martin said, via Steph Yang of The Athletic. “She does so much for us at times. I turn around, she’s playing center back and then we win the ball and she’s attacking. So there’s really nothing she can’t do.”

Gotham FC’s journey to the championship was a remarkable turnaround from their previous season, where they finished with just 13 points. The team underwent significant changes, including new coaching staff and strategy adjustments. These changes paid off, leading to their unlikely but well-deserved championship victory.

“We jokingly say from worst to first,” Purce said on media day, two days before the title match. “But I don’t think we ever really looked at ourselves as the worst. We just know and have known that we can do it. And I think for there to be this redemptive tone, we would have to really be trying to bounce back from something, but this is a new group

Purce herself faced personal challenges, including a recovery from a torn quad, which limited her appearances during the season. However, her performance in the championship game underscored her resilience and skill.

The victory was more than just a win for Purce and Gotham FC; it was a symbol of overcoming adversity for the entire team.

“When I look around the room at my teammates, every single person had a journey,” Purce said.

The championship game was also notable for the presence of Ali Krieger, who is retiring from playing professionally. Krieger, visibly emotional about the end of her career, received comfort from Purce, illustrating the team spirit that highlighted Gotham FC’s season.
