The Arizona State Sun Devils had a weather-delayed season opener on Thursday, August 31, against Southern Utah. The Sun Devils busted out to an early lead before the delay but looked very flat after the delay. They did hold on for a 24-21 win against an FCS opponent, but the overall product wasn't impressive. On a weekend when every Pac-12 team won, Arizona State was by far the least imposing team in the conference. The Sun Devils had the worst game of any Pac-12 school.

The cautionary note to make about all of this, however, is that on a night when the weather was brutal to begin with — over 100 degrees at kickoff — it was not wise to expect Arizona State to play well. This is a young team under first-year head coach Kenny Dillingham. A lot of veteran players left through the transfer portal. The Sun Devils have a new quarterback within a new offensive scheme. These details point to chaos, not stability. Then, ASU had that mid-game delay due to a thunderstorm. The game resumed near midnight in front of a very, very small crowd which stayed around for the end. Nothing about that game was normal, so even if ASU might not be that great, one shouldn't read too much into the opener as a basis for evaluating this team.

Why Oklahoma State Could Cover the Spread

Arizona State really is in full rebuilding mode. The aftermath of the Herm Edwards era has been messy. Kenny Dillingham has a lot of enthusiasm and is pouring all his energy into the job. Next year and in 2025, this program might take off and flourish. However, in the short term, ASU is going back to square one. The Sun Devils have young, inexperienced players under a young head coach and are only just beginning to figure out how to play. This is not a team which is ready to win against a Big 12 Conference opponent. The Sun Devils barely beat Southern Utah at home. Oklahoma State is a lot better than Southern Utah.

Why Arizona State Could Cover the Spread

The Sun Devils are a mess, but Oklahoma State is not exactly in good shape. OSU had a very rough and ragged season opener of its own, scoring fewer than 30 points against Central Arkansas. Both teams struggled — not just one — in their openers. Oklahoma State rode the struggle bus in addition to Arizona State.

Then consider that the temperature for this game will be close to 100 degrees at kickoff, even though this is a night game in Tempe. OSU might not be used to this, and the conditions could play a role in ASU being more energetic and able to play a full 60 minutes. This could be less about the better football team, more about the team which can handle the heat.
