The Oregon Ducks played a cupcake opponent in Week 1. Portland State is a member of the Football Championship Subdivision, or what used to be referred to as Division I-AA. That's a level of competition one notch below the Football Bowl Subdivision, which used to be known as Division I-A. While one shouldn't attach too much significance or meaning to a game between a powerhouse and a cupcake, it is still notable that Oregon put 81 points on the board against Portland State. If a ranked FBS team is going to play an FCS opponent, it might as well score as much as possible. Oregon did.

The value of that game for Oregon was that it showed that quarterback Bo Nix could function well without his 2022 offensive coordinator, Kenny Dillingham. This offseason, Dillingham took the open head coaching position at Arizona State. Oregon head coach Dan Lanning replaced Dillingham with Will Stein, who was offensive coordinator at UTSA in 2022. Clearly, Nix and Stein got along just fine. Now Oregon can move forward with confidence, knowing its offense is in good shape.

Why Oregon Could Cover the Spread

The Oregon offense should be able to do what it wants against Texas Tech. The Red Raiders did not have an especially strong defense last season. Oregon's talent isn't just elite, but experienced as well. Bo Nix is coming back for yet another season of college ball. He has played college football since 2019. He has seasoned receivers and a great rapport with the people he throws the ball to. This should serve Oregon well in this matchup.

Texas Tech's offense, meanwhile, struggled in the season opener against Wyoming. The Red Raiders did not move the ball at will. They had their moments but were not able to maintain a consistent rhythm. Oregon's defense isn't great, but Tech doesn't seem to have the kind of offense which can really punish the Ducks for their limitations.

Why Texas Tech Could Cover the Spread

Tyler Shough is the quarterback for Texas Tech. He transferred from Oregon a few years ago. This game means everything to him. Shough might not play brilliantly all season long, but you know he circled this game on his calendar when it was scheduled. You know that Shough has been studying Oregon film all season long in anticipation of this moment. You know that Shough is going to treat this game as his Super Bowl for the 2023 season.

This game is at night in Lubbock, which is not an easy place for visiting teams to play. Oregon will be tested the whole way in what is definitely a situation ripe with ambush potential.

Final Oregon-Texas Tech Prediction & Pick

The Oregon offense is way too powerful and skilled for the Tech defense. The Ducks should be able to take control of this game. Take Oregon.

Final Oregon-Texas Tech Prediction & Pick: Oregon -6.5
