Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews suffered a broken nose after taking a line drive to the face as a pitcher in a charity softball game over the weekend.

Per Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy says Matthews will undergo surgery sometime in the middle of this week to have that broken nose repaired.

McCarthy added that while Matthews’ injury was unfortunate, it won’t affect the Packers’ future participation in the long-standing charity event.

“I think it's great on a number of fronts any time your players give back to charity, involved in the community. It's a great day for the fans.”

McCarthy also joked that Matthews needs to get to work on some of his softball skills after breaking down film of his linebacker’s game.

Jokes aside, the Packers were fortunate that Matthews didn’t suffer a more serious injury in that situation. He could have suffered a broken orbital bone or even a concussion had it hit another part of his head. That surgery will likely limit Matthews’ participation during the Packers’ mandatory minicamp on June 12-14. But considering the circumstances, a broken nose wasn’t too bad an outcome.

The 32-year-old Matthews remains an integral part of the Green Bay pass rush; he finished with 8.5 sacks last season, which led the team, to go along with 43 tackles. And given the Packers’ lack of depth at outside linebacker as Matthews himself has pointed out, he will need to stay healthy this season or the Packers’ pass rush could be in some trouble.
