The Green Bay Packers shocked a lot of people by trading up to select Jordan Love — when they still have Aaron Rodgers on the team. Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst said he hasn't reached out to Rodgers yet, but with the way the draft board fell, he felt there was no other way to go.

“We’ve got the best quarterback in the National Football League, and we plan to have him for a while competing for championships,” Gutekunst said via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “I can understand the fan base and people thinking, ‘Why would you do this at this time?’ But I just think the value of our board and the way it sat, it was the best for the Green Bay Packers, and we’re really excited to get Jordan here and get him in the door and learning our system.

Gutekunst also said he understands people who might think the best option was to improve the team for next year. But he needs to balance that while also making sure the team is set for the long term. Hence the reason why they drafted Love.

“I know a lot of people will look at this as not a move for the immediate, and I understand that, but the balance of the immediate and the long term is something that I have to consider, and that’s why we did it.”

This is a move that can't be judged until a few years down the road. But if it flops, there are going to be a lot of fans and experts who will be saying ” I told you so.”
