When the Green Bay Packers selected University of Michigan pass rusher Rashan Gary with the 12th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft last month, it was viewed as a high-risk, high-reward move.

In spite of Gary's ridiculous athleticism, he was not all that productive at Michigan, totaling just 9.5 sacks throughout his collegiate career.

However, the Packers love Gary's potential, and head coach Matt LaFleur has already seen Gary's versatility on full display at organized team activities:

“That’s why he’s here, because he’s a versatile player,” said LaFleur, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. “He can be on the edge, we can kick him inside. He’s an incredible athlete and we’ve just got to keep getting him familiarized with exactly what we’re asking him to do, and again, digging at those details so he can go out and execute at a high level.”

Packers outside linebackers coach Mike Smith has also been gushing about Gary, saying that his lack of sacks at Michigan don't matter:

“I never looked at the sacks,” said Smith. “To me, that’s one thing you’re going to learn and I stressed in Kansas City and my guys bought into that. I care about pressure. Affecting the quarterback. That’s the No. 1 thing. I’ll take a guy that does his job play after play after play after play and be consistent and have zero sacks but he does his job and is affecting the quarterback.”

Given that Gary ran the fastest 40-yard dash time of any player over 275 pounds in NFL Scouting Combine history, it seems safe to say that he will be able to generate a fair amount of pressure on the professional level.

Smith even said that he had Gary ranked as the best pass rusher in the draft, even ahead of Ohio State's Nick Bosa.

We'll see if the Packers end up being right about Gary very soon.
