Although the Gren Bay Packers may have undergone some significant changes this offseason, expectations are still as high as ever going into the 2019 NFL season. It seems quarterback Aaron Rodgers has an idea of what he will be looking for from his receiving corps.
There is plenty of speculation regarding some of the changes to the offense with the arrival of new head coach Matt LaFleur. According to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, Rodgers says he and LaFleur will have to trust that the other has the right play in mind:
“Some of that, you just have to figure out ultimately, but the most important thing is trust,” Rodgers said. “It’s a real, true trust. And I think it just comes from conversation, him understanding that I’m just trying to win, and I have to trust my instincts, and me trusting him, that he’s calling what he thinks is the best play in that situation and that he needs me to make it work.”
Rodgers' comments should hardly come as any surprise. Despite his recent struggles in Green Bay, he is widely regarded as the most talented quarterback in the NFL due to his ability to improvise on the fly. Regardless, it is clear that LaFleur is hoping to take some of the pressure off his shoulders moving forward.
He has indicated that the Packers would like to rely on a more balanced approach on offense rather than relying solely on Rodgers' playmaking ability. In order to do so, the two-time MVP will need to be confident that LaFleur is capable of making the right call more often than not. Otherwise, Rodgers may feel forced to revert back to taking things upon himself.
