The Green Bay Packers have hardly made any noise in free agency other than re-signing Aaron Jones. Why? They are trying to get a new deal done with the reigning league MVP.
Michael Silver of NFL Network reported Monday the Packers are working on a contract restructure with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, which in turn would free up cap space. Silver added the deal could be an indicator of Rodgers' future in Green Bay:
Rodgers would join a long list of quarterbacks who have undergone restructures this offseason.
Super Bowl participants Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes each helped their teams free up some money, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signing Brady to an extension and the Kansas City Chiefs altering some components' of Mahomes' massive deal.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill signed a voidable extension to relieve cap burden, while Atlanta Falcons signal-caller and former league MVP Matt Ryan also had his deal restructured.
Rodgers' contract might resemble Ryan's deal with Atlanta. The Falcons essentially tacked on another guaranteed season, ensuring he is almost certainly going to be under center in 2021 and 2022.
The Packers could take the same approach with Rodgers, who in his age-37 season led the NFL in completion percentage (70.7), touchdown passes (48) and total QBR (84.4).
Green Bay is clearly hoping for some continuity, especially on the offensive end. The Packers re-signed Jones and placed an RFA tender on tight end Robert Tonyan.
However, the Packers could use funds to spend on the defensive unit, and a Rodgers restructure would seem to help matters on that front.
