The Green Bay Packers very well might have dug their own grave.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Thursday afternoon star quarterback Aaron Rodgers has become frustrated with the Packers organization and apparently wants out. One of the reasons he wants out could stem from the notion that Green Bay, ahem, wanted him out.

Former ESPN NFL Live host Trey Wingo claims the Packers actually told Rodgers they would trade him in the offseason before changing their tune. Wingo added Rodgers has told members of the organization he is not coming back to Green Bay:

“Sources: The Packers reportedly told Aaron Rodgers they were going to trade him in the off season, then backed off,” Wingo tweeted. “It’s been a bleep show between them ever since. And within the last week Rodgers told the team.. trade or no trade I’m not coming back. Buckle up folks”

The Rodgers situation is almost becoming too absurd to believe.

Rodgers opened the door for skepticism regarding his future with pointed remarks during his press conference after the NFC Championship Game. He later clarified he preferred to remain with the Packers, with team president and CEO Mark Murphy saying Green Bay was not even considering trading Rodgers.

However, quite a bit has changed between then and now. Murphy refused to comment on a potential Rodgers extension during a call with reporters at the end of March. Was that because the front office was hatching behind-the-scenes plans to move A-Rod? Or was this after Green Bay changed course, explaining why an extension had not been agreed to?

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has stated the team has no interest in trading Rodgers. But he and the rest of the front office might be at a point of no return.
