The New England Patriots made the shocking decision to release Cam Newton after giving Mac Jones the starting quarterback job. Now, Newton is spilling the tea on his exit from the Patriots and how everything went down.

It's clear Newton doesn't agree with the way his situation was handled, even doubting the idea he was actually beat out by Mac Jones. The veteran quarterback says New England thought he'd be a distraction, so the decision was made to let him go.

Newton detailed what it was like in the meeting when he was informed of his release. Not only was Patriots head coach Bill Belichick obviously in the room, but Matt Patricia was there as well. It apparently was pretty awkward:

“It was uncomfortable for everybody,” Newton said, via Ben Volin of The Boston Globe.

Volin had a rather interesting take on Patricia's role in this whole situation:

But back to Newton. There has been plenty of speculation as to why Newton lost the Patriots' starting quarterback job to Jones and why he was ultimately released. Jones did play well in the preseason, but many also wondered if Newton's unvaccinated status and COVID-19 mishap that resulted in him missing nearly a week of practice played a role. Newton actually thinks he would have been released even if he didn't miss those days, but he was “bamboozled” about having to sit out.

Cam Newton is now hoping to get another job, while Jones is preparing to face the Miami Dolphins in Week 1. There has been plenty of drama in New England already, and Newton's latest comments are only adding to it.
