The New England Patriots have signed safety Patrick Chung to a one-year contract extension, according to Field Yates of ESPN. The deal will take Chung through 2021.

Chung, who is scheduled to make $1.9 million in 2019 and $1.9 once again in 2020, is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he played 15 games and registered 84 tackles, a half of a sack, an interception and a fumble recovery.

The 31-year-old played his collegiate football at the University of Oregon and was originally selected by the Patriots in the second round (34th pick overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft.

He appeared in all 16 contests during his rookie year, finishing with 29 tackles, a couple of sacks, a pick and a forced fumble. Then, the following season, Chung became a full-time starter and posted 91 tackles, three interceptions, nine passes defended and a defensive touchdown.

The Kingston, Jamaica native spent the first four years of his career in New England before joining the Philadelphia Eagles for one season in 2013, totaling 63 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Chung then re-joined the Pats that ensuing offseason and has been a starting safety for them ever since, helping the Patriots win three Super Bowls since arriving back on the scene in 2014.

He has never made a Pro Bowl, but he has been one of the most consistent members of New England's secondary and one of the better safeties in the league throughout his career.

The Pats won 11 games and captured the AFC East division title this past season and then went on to win their sixth Super Bowl title.
