The New England Patriots are heading into a new era after two decades with superstar quarterback Tom Brady under center. Now that Brady will be suiting up for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, speculation has run rampant about what could be in store for New England at the most crucial position on the football field.
Head coach Bill Belichick and company have decided to go with another big-name player at the position by currently passing on the opportunity to sign Cam Newton, Teddy Bridgewater, Philip Rivers, or trade for Andy Dalton. However, a trade could be forthcoming to move up in the 2020 NFL Draft to get one of the top quarterback prospects available, according to NFL insider Mel Kiper of ESPN via NESN.com.
“There’s word out that they like Jalen Hurts from Oklahoma,” Kiper said on WEEI’s “Ordway, Merloni, and Fauria.” “He could be used in packages, and they could do with him they did with Lamar Jackson his rookie year in Baltimore. …
“There’s talk they could look at Jalen Hurts. I’m not buying 23, but if they move out of the first round, could they look at Jalen Hurts in the second round?”
LSU's Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa out of Alabama are expected to be the first quarterbacks off the board, but Jalen Hurts' position in the draft remains uncertain. Justin Herbert (Oregon), Jordan Love (Utah State), and Jacob Eason (Washington) are also intriguing prospects for a team looking to secure their long-term at quarterback. The Patriots could also look in their direction once on the clock if they miss out on Hurts.
Ironically enough, the Patriots have had opportunities in recent drafts to bring in Brady's successor, with Lamar Jackson being the most notable, but they held off the temptation. It'll be interesting to see whether they do go after Hurts or one of the other promising young quarterbacks this time around.
