The Penn State – Iowa matchup in Week 6 was juiced up before the opening kickoff as both teams entered the contest ranked in the top four in the country. It's been almost a week now since the game was played, and the tensions are still running high.

Iowa won the game over Penn State, 23-20 but it was accusations of the Nittany Lions faking injuries that keeps this story going on.

After Hawkeyes fans booed Nittany Lions players who were down on the field during the game, head coach Kirk Ferentz said, “They smelled a rat.” Penn State coach James Franklin, per ESPN, responded big time to those thoughts.

“How does this strategy make sense against a huddle team?” Franklin said. “People use this strategy to slow people down. Spread offenses, tempo offenses. They huddle. So that strategy did not make sense in this situation. In our six years of playing them, six years straight — 4-2 with our record — has that ever shown up? Has anyone seen that? In my eight years as a head coach, has anyone seen that? Has that shown up at Penn State? My 12 years as a head coach, has that shown up? It has not shown up.”

Franklin went on to backup his players noting that same who left the game for Penn State never returned while posing the question why they would do that. However, a few of the injuries that did pop up saw players return after missing one snap and happened after Iowa picked up big yardage. Even the television broadcast during the game brought it up as a possibility for an explanation as to what was going on.

The two sides will have to agree to disagree on this one. Ferentz has backed up his stance and Franklin has defended his players at Penn State and his track record as a coach of not doing this.
