The Philadelphia Phillies finally ran into a little bit of regression this past weekend. They faced the lowly Colorado Rockies, and they did so at Coors Field, normally a playground for hitters. The potent and loaded Phillie offense should have run wild in Denver, but it didn't. In three games encompassing 29 innings, Philadelphia lost twice. The Phillies finally lost a series after winning 15 regular-season series in a row. In 28 of the 29 innings the Phillies played at Coors Field over the weekend, they scored a total of six runs. In the one inning not included in that spell of futility, the Phils scored six runs, and that outburst in the top of the ninth on Saturday night enabled them to avoid a sweep with an 8-4 victory. (Philadelphia trailed 3-2 going into that inning.) Philadelphia's offense basically had one really good inning in three Coors Field games. The consistency which has defined this team — which is still 38-16 through 54 games, a 114-win pace — briefly left in Colorado. Now the Phils will try to reclaim that consistency as they head to San Francisco.

The Giants have had a wild and successful week. They were comeback kings this past week, scoring the tying or go-ahead runs in the eighth, ninth, or tenth innings in four consecutive wins over the Pirates and Mets. The Giants did blow a two-run lead in the bottom the ninth against the Mets on Sunday, and they blew a 6-2 lead to the Pirates earlier in the week, but their four consecutive comebacks gave them a winning week and lifted them to the .500 mark. With other National League teams struggling, the Giants are back in the wild card hunt and have new reason to think they can make something of their season.

Why The Phillies Could Cover the Spread

The Phillies finally got cooled off. The fact that the Rockies snapped Philly's 15-series winning streak might seem like a surprise, and to a certain extent, it is. However, it's highly unusual for any team to win 15 consecutive series. The Phillies were bound to run into some regression and lose two of three ballgames. Every team is going to lose two of three games on several occasions over the course of a season. In a sport where elite teams generally lose 50 games in a season (teams that lose 50 win 112, which is tremendous when judged by historical standards), there will be several instances in which teams lose two of three. The Phillies should therefore be unconcerned with their series in Colorado. It was an outlier, and now the team can reset in San Francisco and face a Giants team it swept in Philadelphia earlier in the season.

Why The Giants Could Cover the Spread

After a good week in Pittsburgh and New York, the Giants come home to face a Philadelphia team which is struggling. What should also help the Giants is that they face Taijuan Walker, easily the weakest of the Philadelphia starters. The Giants should be able to score at least four or five runs. Combine this with the fact that Blake Snell, the 2023 National League Cy Young Award winner, will take the bump for the Giants. San Francisco has to like the pitching matchup here.

Final Phillies-Giants Prediction & Pick

Usually we pick sides in these MLB predictions articles, but this is one of those rare times when the total looks too good to pass up. Walker is not an elite pitcher, and Blake Snell has needed time to settle into the season. He isn't pitching at a Cy Young level, and the Phillies' offense is bound to be better after a weird weekend against the Rockies. Take the over with the number being set so low.
