The Prince of Persia Sands of Time Remake that we've been waiting for since it was first announced in 2020 is yet to come. While there hasn't been any shortage of new Prince of Persia games in recent times, Ubisoft reminded everyone during the recently concluded Ubisoft Forward live stream that the Sands of Time Remake is still coming, but won't be around until 2026.

Originally announced during Ubisoft Forward 2020 and slated for a 2021 release for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, the game just released an updated release window, which will not be until 2026. Ubisoft is also dropping the remake in its title. Moving forward, fans can simply call the game “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.”

We've just recently covered Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and The Rogue Prince of Persia, two great 2D platformers each with its own merits. While they are great games in their own right and are amazing detours, fans are still clamoring for a return to 3D platforming action-adventure.

So, regardless of how many 2D platforming Prince of Persia games Ubisoft releases, fans are still looking for the Sands of Time Remake announced back in 2020. And thankfully now, we're sure to get the game in two years' time.

The Sands of Time Remake was “built from the ground up”

Ubisoft stated during the Ubisoft Forward presentation that Ubisoft will “rebuild [Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake] from the ground up, which captures the magic of the original game.” Ubisoft also mentions that the game has just exited the pre-production stage and is now entering full production. Aside from Ubisoft Montreal, the studios Ubisoft Toronto, Ubisoft Bucharest, Ubisoft Pune, and E-Studio will be working on this project.

The game has been in development hell for a while now, and it's surprising to find out that after four years since its initial announcement, the game has just exited the pre-production phase. While worked on by a different Ubisoft studio, Skull and Bones' long development troubles may worry some fans that The Sands of Time might suffer the same fate as Skull and Bones.

Recent successes of Prince of Persia should enliven fans

Still, Prince of Persia fans may have nothing to worry about in the end, as Ubisoft has shown much love and care in its most recent Prince of Persia releases, namely The Lost Crown and The Rogue.

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown gets “Divine Trials”

The latest content update for The Lost Crown should now be available to all players who own the title. The “Divine Trials” update adds 22 new expert challenges for players to overcome. Players can now access the Hall of Memorials, through a special door located in the Haven, and choose from four sets of challenges.

These challenges become progressively more difficult and are designed with exotic conditions. These trials will challenge players with platforming, puzzles, and combat, as well as stand toe-to-toe once again against the reworked Boss Battles. Players will gradually unlock new Trials as each new power is acquired.

However, players who have already completed the trials will get direct access to all of them at once, in their existing saves. Four new amulets and outfits will reward players who managed to beat the revised Boss at the end of each set. Players will also get a short preview of the future Story DLC “Mask of Darkness”, which will arrive later this year in September.

The Rogue Prince of Persia gets first content update “The Temple of Fire”

Meanwhile, the recently released The Rogue Prince of Persia received its first major title update to its Early Access during the conference. “The Temple of Fire” brings a vibrant yet treacherous new biome in which players will have to mobilize all their skills to overcome new enemies, traps, and traversal challenges.

Evil Empire added two new enemy types, the Shielded Warrior and Duellist, as well as one new weapon, the Flaming Censers. This update also introduces the Meta Progression Skill Tree, which allows players to use Spirit Glimmers to unlock persistent improvements, an update that solves one of the issues we mentioned in our First Impressions article.

The Temple of Fire is the first major content addition among multiple updates leading up to the 1.0 launch of the game, based on community feedback collected throughout the Early Access phase.

Fans who also want to try out upcoming content updates earlier than the scheduled release can also opt into the game's Public Test Branch, giving fans early access to exciting but untested content ahead of official stable releases.
