It's fair to say Lionel Messi's stint with PSG hasn't exactly gone according to plan. While it looks like it will be two straight Ligue 1 titles for the French super team, it's the Champions League both Messi and PSG mainly desire.

Unfortunately, their defeat to Bayern Munich earlier this month marked the second straight year they were knocked out in the round of 16. The Parisiens also suffered their first home defeat in two years to Rennes this past weekend in a result that saw Messi booed and jeered by the home fans.

Many believe Messi has checked out and his inconsistent form in the second half of the season is a result of him winning the World Cup in December and virtually completing football.

Despite that, his services are still desired not only by PSG, but Saudi Arabia, MLS, and most notably, Barcelona.

With his contract expiring in the summer, there have been murmurs of a potential return to the Nou Camp for Messi. Sergi Roberto — who scored the equalizer for Barcelona in their 2-1 win over Real Madrid this past weekend — certainly believes his former teammate deserves better and is hopeful of a reunion.

“I hope Messi returns to Barça,” Roberto told Jijantes FC following Barcelona's win over Real Madrid. “We are waiting for him. He doesn't deserve the treatment he's getting in Paris.”

Given that Barcelona had to let go of Messi in 2021 because they exceeded their salary cap in the first place, it remains to be seen how a potential deal would even work unless he took major pay cut and La Blaugrana sell off a number of players.

But as far as romantics go, a Barcelona homecoming for Messi would definitely be special.
