The level of speed and power is different between college and professional football, so it's not usually expected for rookies to be able to contribute right away. But there are certain rookies like Jonathan Abram who just impresses the teams that pick them up.

The Mississippi State product has so far impressed in his preseason outings for the Oakland Raiders. In fact, defensive coordinator Paul Guenther can't help but be impressed with how mature the 22-year-old carries himself ever since being drafted 27th overall in the 2019 Draft.

He had this to say about the rookie, as reported by AP's Josh Dubow:

“I just think he's wise beyond his years,” defensive coordinator Paul Guenther said. “He doesn't act like a rookie. When he's out there, he sounds like a seven or eight-year vet. I think the players take notice of that. Just how he prepares, how he studies, how he communicates with the guys on and off the field. The thing is not too big for him. The players see that. He doesn't act like your typical rookie.”

Guenther expressed how the rookie safety conducted himself in a professional manner that is expected out of five-year vets who have established themselves in the league. This high praise is surely raising his stock among fans and neutrals alike.

His collegiate statistics also showcase how NFL-ready he is. He notched 96 solo tackles, 5 sacks, two interceptions, and three forced fumbles in his two years as a Bulldog.

If his game translates well into the NFL, he is inevitably going to have a long and successful career as a safety. He has the right tools, credentials, and mindset to become a major asset that the Raiders can count on for years.
