Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden has not been shy about voicing his opinion on some of his players. His no-nonsense approach may have given an indication of how the receiving corps is stacking up thus far.
The Raiders have added a bevy of new faces to the receiving corps this offseason. According to Vic Tafur of The Athletic, wide receiver Ryan Switcher has caught the eye of Gruden:
“He’s a guy that can change the game, I think, on third down. He’s a tough matchup. He’s quick. He has vertical speed. He has special teams ability.”
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for wide receiver Martavis Bryant, whom Gruden has called out and told to “play better” after his poor performances during training camp.
Needless to say, Gruden's comments would have been hard to believe at the start of training camp. Not much was said about the Raiders' trade for Switzer early in the offseason, however, it seems the new acquisition has gotten off to a solid start in Oakland.
Regardless, it is still disappointing to see Bryant has yet to make a strong impression on his new coach. Oakland made a heavier investment bringing him in than Switzer after giving up a third-round pick in this year's draft.
Despite his disciplinary issues, Bryant has tremendous upside as a bonafide deep threat. Unfortunately for him, that will not be enough to convince Gruden of giving him a vital role in this offense. That said, he will need to buckle down on the playbook if he is going to avoid being outdone by Switzer.
