Eric Weddle's sudden spring out of retirement to join the Los Angeles Rams was shocking, to put it lightly. The six-time Pro Bowler hasn't played since 2019 but is now gearing up to help the Rams knock off the Arizona Cardinals in the Wild Card round.

Weddle felt loads of emotions as he made his decision to unretire and join the Rams. Per Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times:

“I had a rush of emotions. You get that call and you’re like, ‘This isn’t really going to happen.’ You’re kind of reserved.

“Then you realize it’s serious, and you get excited, and you realize everything that entails — I’m leaving my family, my kids, the routine. And then it’s kind of overwhelming. You have to take a step back and figure out, ‘Can I do this? Is this realistic? Does it make sense? Can you do what they’re asking you to do?’ ”

Weddle acknowledged his physical state in a phone call with Los Angeles defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. The concerns over the 37-year-old's readiness are valid. Weddle explained that he knows what it takes to play and acknowledged that he'll be ready to go on occasion.

“I know how much time and effort goes into a season, but I’m close enough to where I can help out for one game, for all the marbles, for 10-15-20 snaps,” Weddle said. “I can do that. If I didn’t feel like I could go out there and be what I expect to be, then I wouldn’t be sitting here right now.”

The Rams could use some help on defense but it remains to be seen how much help Weddle can provide. Still, his presence should be of some benefit as the Rams face the Cardinals at SoFi Stadium on Monday.
