Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is happy for his former teammates in the Los Angeles Rams as they head to Super Bowl 56 with Matthew Stafford leading the way. However, he admitted there's a little bit of pain and regret on what he missed.
In an interview with Bally Sports, Goff bared his thoughts on the Rams reaching the Super Bowl in the season right after trading him to the Lions in exchange for Stafford. That turned out to be the best move for Los Angeles, with the veteran quarterback finding immediate success under Sean McVay.
As for Goff, however, the Lions continued to struggle and finished the 2021 campaign with the second-worst record in the NFL of 3-13-1–behind only the 3-14 Jacksonville Jaguars.
Despite seeing his former team succeed without him, Goff showed genuine happiness for the Rams and Stafford.
“Most of all, I’m happy for those guys because I know how hard they’ve worked, and they deserve it,” Goff said. “Of course, as a human, you feel like you can be missing out at times. But I think about, if I was in that situation, how would they feel about me? They’d be equally as thrilled for me.
“It’s something that you wish you could be a part of in your own right with the Lions, but we’re not right now — and watching them do it is just another part of the journey.”
It's hard not to feel for Jared Goff here. After all, he has already led the Rams to a Super Bowl berth, only to find himself being replaced years later while LA did its best to find weapons to support another run to the big stage.
Of course we will never know what would have happened had the Rams opted to keep Goff while still making the moves they made this year. Nonetheless, we can't also blame the 27-year-old QB for thinking of the what ifs.
On the other side, though, fans can only be happy for Stafford who is making his first Super Bowl appearance after several frustrating and unsuccessful years with the Lions.
Goff will certainly be cheering for the Rams when they take on the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, and while it might be a little painful, he's going to wish them to win the title.
