The Los Angeles Rams were forced to make plenty of tough decisions this offseason due to their limited cap situation. Nearly a week after the move was made, Sean McVay shared insight on why the Rams traded Brandin Cooks.

The Rams traded Cooks and a fourth-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for a second-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. While McVay enjoyed working with Cooks, he is confident in the wide receivers on the current roster.

“It’s the result of a lot of tough decisions that we really had to make organizationally as a whole this offseason,” McVay said, via Jay Glazer of Fox Sports. “Losing a lot of great players that have been instrumental in our success and Brandin is one of those guys as well, but it’s also a reflection of the confidence that we do have in some other players on our roster.”

Besides Cooks, the Rams also parted ways with Todd Gurley on the offensive side of the ball. Gurley was released by Los Angeles before the lucrative extension he signed in 2018 kicked in.

For Cooks, he is coming off of the worst year of his career, catching just 42 passes for 583 yards and two touchdowns in 2019. Injuries have continued to be a concern for the big-play wide receiver out of Oregon State. Over the past few seasons, Cooks has sustained quite a few concussions.

Nevertheless, trading Cooks leaves the Rams with a receiving corps that still features Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Josh Reynolds. At the same time, Los Angeles now has another second-round pick that could be used to select a receiver. As talented as Cooks is, the Rams are more prepared to replace him than other teams would be.
