Reports have surfaced about the Los Angeles Rams' optimism about signing defensive tackle Aaron Donald. Head coach Sean McVay has seemingly solidified that notion during his recent press conference.

McVay has been rather non-committal about Donald's looming contract extension. However, his recent update suggests a deal could be reached soon, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport:

“Aaron, see you soon, buddy.” In all seriousness: “There is a level of increased optimism. … There are a lot of things that need to get done to be finalized, but we’re working in a positive direction.”

This is undoubtedly the most optimistic McVay has been when discussing Donald's contract. That said, it is safe to assume that both sides have finally neared an agreement.

Donald and the Rams have been deadlocked in contract negotiations since last year. His holdout lasted so long that he ultimately wound up missing the season opener. Fortunately, he did not disappoint after registering 41 tackles and 11.0 sacks in just 14 games en route to Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Regardless, there has been concern about the lingering holdout this time around. Although Los Angeles has no worries about Donald's playing shape, there is still the matter of getting him assimilated with all the new changes on defense. That said, it is evident that they are hoping to get him back at some point this week.

Donald is poised to become the highest-paid defensive player in the league. The Cincinnati Bengals recently signed defensive tackle Geno Atkins to a four-year, $65.2 million extension. His deal is likely to pale in comparison to what Donald will ultimately sign.
