Over the weekend, Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott signed a record-breaking contract extension, ending his holdout. Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley never held out, but sees the harm in it for other running backs, namely Los Angeles Chargers back Melvin Gordon.

Gordon is in the midst of a holdout that will almost certainly miss regular season games. The contract dispute is a lengthy one, and there are basically two schools of thought.

One is that the running backs owe loyalty to the team that drafted them and that signed them to a contract. The other is that running backs shouldn't put their entire career on the line for a team that isn't even willing to pay them the money that they've rightfully earned.

Things get a little more complicated for Melvin Gordon though. The Chargers are a legitimate Super Bowl contender, which means he's expected to play for a shot at a ring. But a ring isn't guaranteed, no matter how good the team is on paper.

The smart move for Gordon is to hold out and make sure he gets his money, or gets a trade. The argument that the running back owes the team some type of loyalty only works if loyalty is shown by the team.

In this case, the Chargers are asking too much of Gordon. It's a two-way street, and general manager Tom Telesco isn't playing his part.

Hopefully, the holdout ends soon so Gordon can get back on the field, which is certainly what Todd Gurley wants.
