Aaron Donald put the finishing touch on his Hall-of-Fame career in Super Bowl 56. He played a fantastic game to help lead the Los Angeles Rams to a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. He had a legitimate case to be the game's MVP. The fact that Cooper Kupp won the award instead doesn't diminish how amazing Donald was and always has been
With eight Pro Bowls, seven First Team All-Pro selections, three AP Defensive Player of the Year awards and now a Super Bowl ring to his name, Donald has won everything there is to win. Now, there are rumors that he could leave the game after winning the ultimate prize and retire from the NFL.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano discussed the rumors around Donald and what it would take for the Rams' superstar to play next season.
We started to hear some buzz late in the week that the Rams' star defensive tackle might be considering [retirement]. And here's what else we heard: Donald might need to become the league's highest-paid defensive player in order to play in 2022. There was even some chatter coming out of the Pro Bowl that Donald needs a 15% markup on the highest-paid tag, though that is unconfirmed.
Although Donald would be stepping away at the top of his game, retiring is a sound decision. The 30-year-old would hang up his cleats with a body of work that will absolutely get him a spot in Canton and would get to preserve his health. Leaving the game on top would be a fitting and worthy ending for one of the game's best-ever defenders. But winning even more rings would enhance his legacy even further.
