While Masai Ujiri knew Kyle Lowry's time with the Toronto Raptors was coming to an end, it didn't make the transition any easier. In fact, it got tougher for the exec.
Lowry left the Raptors this free agency, joining the Miami Heat through a sign-and-trade deal. The veteran guard inked a three-year, $85 million deal with Miami to pair up with his good friend Jimmy Butler in a bid to contend for the championship.
During his presser after reaching a new deal with the Raptors to become it vice chairman/president, the renowned NA exec talked about Lowry and how tough it is to let him go. However, he admitted it was a great decision for the 35-year-old playmaker since the Raptors are rebuilding and there won't be much opportunity for him to contend as they enter a new era.
“It's been really tough for us to see a player as incredible as that go,” Ujiri said of Lowry, per Aaron Rose of Sports Illustrated.
For what it's worth, despite his respect and admiration for Kyle Lowry, Masai Ujiri's competitive spirit is very much present as he expressed his hope to beat his former player multiple times in the upcoming season.
“We wish him all the best where he is. He's in great hands in Miami with that organization. … We just hope we beat them four times a year and we'll be good that way,” the exec added.
Lowry's departure didn't come as a surprise since he has been involved in a lot of talks during the 2020-21 trade deadline. However, it's certainly sad for fans to see him leave the team after giving it his all and helping them win their lone championship in 2019.
For sure, it will be emotional every time Lowry visits Canada to play the Raptors.
