Baltimore Ravens wide receiver and return specialist De’Anthony Thomas has elected to opt-out of the upcoming 2020 NFL campaign, according to Pro Football Talk. Thomas has selected such an option as every NFL player can elect to do this season due to the ongoing “coronavirus” pandemic.

Thomas is not the only player to opt-out as it stands today as Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Chance Warmack have also decided to sit out in 2020.

After spending the first five seasons of his professional playing career as a member of the Chiefs, Thomas signed with the Ravens back November 2019. He then re-signed with Baltimore by way of a one-year free-agent contract that came in March. Now slated to miss the entire 2020 season, Thomas was in line to become the team's starting punt and kick returner, though he probably wouldn't have featured too much as a wide receiver for the Ravens. With training camp set to get underway in the coming weeks, the Ravens will be forced to look to the open market to fill the void left by Thomas on special teams.

The Ravens finished last season as the top team in the AFC before ultimately coming up way short come postseason time. Despite a first-round bye and a home playoff game in the divisional round, the surging Ravens were immediately ousted from Super Bowl contention by the red hot Tennessee Titans. However, quarterback Lamar Jackson was tabbed as the league MVP in 2019 while the Ravens will remain in good hands moving forward.
