Baltimore Ravens star quarterback Lamar Jackson made waves this weekend when he changed his social media headers to an image of a teeth grill with “I need $” on it. Jackson denied that this social media activity has anything to do with ongoing contract negotiations with the Ravens, but he did make other comments about the situation.

Here's what Jackson said about the possibility of having a new deal in hand before training camp and if he would hold out if there's no deal, via Safid Deen of USA TODAY:

“Hopefully,” Jackson said when asked if he’ll agree to a new deal before training camp. “I’m not going to say ‘yeah’ right now. Hopefully. But it’s God’s timing.”

When asked if he would hold out of training camp until a new deal is reached, Jackson said: “I don’t have that on my mind.”

Lamar Jackson is his own agent, which adds another layer of intrigue to this whole situation. The former MVP is currently set to enter the option year of his rookie deal, which will pay him a base salary of about $23 million for the 2022 season. He's seeking a massive rise on a long-term contract.

The market for quarterback contracts continues to explode. Deshaun Watson just recently got a five-year, $230 million guaranteed contract from the Cleveland Browns despite being embroiled in a sexual misconduct scandal. Jackson is surely taking that contract into account as he negotiates his own deal.

Lamar Jackson won MVP in 2019 and had another strong season in 2020 before taking a step back in 2021, which complicates the contract negotiations. While Jackson is terrific, the Ravens might have some reservations about a player who often struggles to throw downfield and who takes such a beating from running the football.

Keep an eye on these talks.
