Preseason games always present a risk for players to get injured, and that’s precisely what happened to Washington Redskins rookie running back Derrius Guice, who reportedly hurt his knee in his very first game as a pro on Thursday against the New England Patriots, per the Redskins’ official Twitter account.

This isn’t the type of news Washington fans would like to hear. Guice was regarded, before the NFL Draft last June, as one of the best backfield talents of his class. He has a spotty background in terms of attitude and behavior, but his skill was always going to be valued more in the draft.

Chad Ryan of the Redskins Capital Connection, meanwhile, allayed some fears among Washington nation by saying Guice’s injury does not appear to be serious.

In any case, the Redskins have zero reasons to send Guice back into the field to play in a meaningless contest. It also would not be a surprise if Washington decides to keep the former LSU Tiger off the field for the remainder of these exhibition games.

Guice is in the running for the starting tailback role for the Redskins. He is competing for that spot with Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine, who will be the left as the top two options in the backfield for Washington if Guice’s injury proves serious enough to make him miss games in the regular season. The Redskins also have Rob Kelley and Kapri Bibb in the running backs depth chart.

Before leaving the Patriots game, Guice had 19 rushing yards on six carries.
