The Washington Redskins have their quarterback situation all sorted out with Alex Smith. However, they still have to surround him with capable weapons at the skill positions in order to get the most out of him. They’ve already started to address their need at wide receiver in free agency by signing Paul Richardson to a big deal.

Meanwhile, head coach Jay Gruden has revealed that there’s a “good possibility” the team picks up a running back early in next month’s draft.

The ground game was a sore spot for the Redskins last season. They were among the least efficient teams in terms of running the ball. Lead back Rob Kelley was limited to just seven games due to a sprained knee. Rookie Samaje Perine took over as the starter, but he didn’t exactly impress. He finished with 603 rushing yards on 3.4 yards per carry with one touchdown.

The Redskins will be armed with the 13th and 44th overall picks in the first couple of rounds, which they could use to address that need in the backfield. Outside of Saquon Barkley, there doesn’t seem to be another running back who’s a lock to get picked in the first round. That means Washington could still end up with one of the top backs in the class – Sonny Michel, Derrius Guice, Nick Chubb, etc. – in the second round or later.

Despite last season’s brilliance where he threw for 4,000 yards, Smith is not known as a big-time passer. He needs an effective ground game to be at his best, which makes Washington’s choice of which running back to pick all the more important.
