It looks like more ass-kicking is coming, as Jake Gyllenhaal is set to reprise his role as Elwood Dalton in a Road House sequel.
Currently, no details regarding the new movie have been released from Amazon. Variety reports that Amazon MGM Studio chief Jennifer Salke made some noise about it on Tuesday to advertisers at its first-ever upfront presentation.
Road House and its successful Prime Video debut
The movie was a massive hit for the streamer, attracting nearly 80 million worldwide viewers to date and over 50 million worldwide viewers in its first two weekends. This made it the most-watched film produced debut ever globally by Amazon MGM Studios.
Doug Liman directed it, and along with Gyllenhaal, it starred Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Joaquim de Almeida, Austin Post, Conor McGregor, Arturo Castro, Lukas Gage, B.K. Cannon, Darren Barnet, Beau Knapp, Dominique Columbus, Catfish Jean, Bob Menery, Kevin Carroll, Hannah Lanier, and Travis Van Winkle.
In it, Gyllenhaal plays Dalton, who's an ex-UFC fighter escaping his dark past for a new life. “Dalon is barely scraping by on the reputation that still precedes him when he is spotted by Frankie (Williams), owner of a roadhouse in the Florida Keys,” the official premise states.
We reviewed the film last March. In the review, we wrote, “Road House gets bogged down by contemporary action movie tropes: mediocre effects, an unnecessary gimmick (UFC), and oversold self-awareness. For the most part, though, Liman's remake offers a crowd-pleasing blend of positive vibes, pristine location scouting, and an appealing movie star beating up a whole lot of people. And don't worry: There is a gator.”
We gave it a B.
The movie was a remake of the 1989 film starring the late Patrick Swayze. In it, he played a bouncer hired to clean up a honky-tonk named the Double Deuce in a Missouri town.
As for Gyllenhaal's interest in the movie, he spoke to Games Radar a few months ago, saying, “And at some point, maybe on television, I remember seeing clips of it [the original Road House], and it was also sparking interest. It really had a strange, intense resonance. And I was of an age when I didn't really know what exactly it was that I was watching.”
Salke said during the upfront, “As we saw this spring the world went crazy for a little movie called Road House. Nearly 8 million viewers globally have watched Road House. We like to watch this, these results, like a baby.”
Again, the new Road House movie has very few details regarding the release date, plot, and who will star with Gyllenhaal. However, it's a safe bet that it will pack a punch as much as the first one did.
