Just a day after it was reported that the Jacksonville Jaguars were in negotiations with Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich to become their next head coach, the New Orleans Saints have now swooped in.

Per Adam Schefter, the team is planning to interview Leftwich for their HC job:

The Saints already have a number of candidates following Sean Payton's announcement earlier this week. He's stepping away after 15 years at the helm. Among the possible coaches who could take over for him are Aaron Glenn and Dennis Allen, alongside Leftwich.

The Bucs OC has been in this position since 2019 and played a key part in helping Tampa Bay win a Super Bowl in 2021. He's known as the ultimate player's coach and has received the utmost praise from different guys on the Buccaneers roster, most notably Tom Brady.

The Saints would be delighted to hire Leftwich, who has yet to receive a head coaching job in the NFL. But, we have to remember Payton basically just quit. It wouldn't be a surprise to see New Orleans take their time in the search. Nevertheless, Leftwich is absolutely a solid replacement if the organization decides to go in that direction. Being a former QB as well, he could help with the development of Ian Book, Taysom Hill, and Jameis Winston. Well, that's is Hill and Winston stay with the Saints this offseason.
