In a shocking move, New Orleans Saints head football coach Sean Payton announced his is stepping down, leaving the team he coached for 15 seasons.

Payton was one of the longest tenured coaches in the NFL. During his press conference Tuesday, he took the “Ted Lasso” route, bearing gifts, a la food, for the owner, Gayle Benson.

Payton presented the widow of former owner Tom Benson a king cake. He even referenced the popular Apple TV series and the biscuits he would bring to the team owner. He then thanked Gayle and her late husband Tom Benson for all of their support.

Payton went on to discuss how he was never given a “no” from the owners box. Some time constraints might have kept them from pursuing something he wanted for the franchise, but he never got a “no.”

Payton, 58, finished his time with New Orleans posting a 152-89 record. The Saints were 9-8 in the playoffs under Payton's watch and he led the team to their only Super Bowl appearance and championship in 2009.

He won the AP Coach of the Year once, back in 2006.

Payton still had three years remaining on his existing contract, but recent reports had him mulling over his future.

New Orleans finished a difficult season that saw them come extremely close to a playoff berth. Had the Los Angeles Rams held on to their 17-point lead to defeat the San Francisco 49ers in Week 18, the Saints would have clinched a wild card berth. The 49ers would have missed the playoffs.
